Direct pulp capping procedures versus root canal treatment in young permanent vital teeth with pulp exposure due to caries. A systematic review
نویسنده
چکیده
Purpose: To evaluate the available evidence on pulp capping procedures and root canal treatment in young permanent teeth with vital pulps exposed by caries. Methods: The study was conducted as a systematic review of the literature. Three databases, PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and The Cochrane Library were searched. Reference lists of relevant articles were hand searched. The quality of all relevant publications was rated. Results: Ten original scientific studies were included in the review. The quality was rated as low in all studies. The search failed to disclose any article directly comparing pulp capping and root canal treatment. The level of evidence was insufficient to draw any conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the two treatment concepts. High success rates are reported for pulp capping procedures in exposure due to caries, though it is not possible to compare them to success rates of root canal treatment. The review confirms the lack of high quality studies on the treatment of young permanent teeth with cariously exposed pulps. (Am J Dent 2016;29:201-207). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: For the treatment of young permanent teeth with pulp exposure due to caries there is currently no evidence to support the assumption on pulp capping being more beneficial than root canal treatment in achieving a symptom free tooth with normal periapical conditions. : Dr. Helena Fransson, Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University, SE-205 06 Malmö, Sweden. Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation of Direct Pulp Capping Procedures Performed by Postgraduate Students
Aim of study. To evaluate the outcome of direct pulp capping procedures in permanent teeth performed by postgraduate students during their training program in Endodontics. Material and Methods. 39 patients with dental pulp exposures were evaluated clinically and radiologically after direct pulp capping procedure and followed for at least 24 months. The results were considered successful if the ...
متن کاملClinical and radiographic assessment of direct pulp capping and pulpotomy in young permanent teeth.
Seventy-six vital permanent incisors with complicated crown t’ractures in 72 children were assessed clinically and radiographically for the healing of pulp exposures treated by direct pulp capping or by pulpotomy. Thirty-eight of these teeth had pinpoint exposures, complete roots, and were treated by pulp capping. Pulpotomy was the treatment for the other 38 teeth that had incomplete root devel...
متن کاملMaturogenesis of a cariously exposed immature permanent tooth using MTA for direct pulp capping: a case report.
Successful direct pulp capping of cariously exposed permanent teeth with reversible pulpitis and incomplete apex formation can prevent the need for root canal treatment. A case report is presented which demonstrates the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as a direct pulp capping material for the purpose of continued maturogenesis of the root. Clinical and radiographic follow-up demonstrate...
متن کاملClinical evaluation of mineral trioxide aggregate and biodentine as direct pulp capping agents in carious teeth
BACKGROUND Root canal treatment has been a routine treatment option for carious exposure of the dental pulp. In the context of minimally invasive dentistry, direct pulp capping (DPC) procedure with a reliable biomaterial may be considered as an alternative provided the pulp status is favorable. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), a bioactive cement with excellent sealing ability and biocompatibil...
متن کاملPulp protection in today clinical practice: what about the role of materials?
Vital Pulp Protection and Therapy (VPPT) is the treatment that maintains pulp tissue in a healthy and functional state, whenever the dentin-pulp complex has been compromised by caries, trauma or restorative procedures. Pulp vitality and function is not essential for mature tooth survival. Mature permanent teeth without a vital pulp can survive for a long time after a successful endodontic treat...
